Working with No Signal

The app is built to work in a dead zone. Here's what keeps working, what waits, and how to tell.

The short version

  1. 1Keep working exactly as normal — visits, notes and photos all save on your phone first.
  2. 2The sync chip at the top of Today tells you what's uploaded and what's waiting.
  3. 3Everything uploads by itself as soon as you have signal again.
  4. 4Download your map beforehand if you know the area is bad.

Losing signal is not an error in this app. It’s a normal part of the job, and the whole thing is built around it.

Everything you record is saved on your phone first, before it goes anywhere near the internet. Only afterwards does it upload. That order is what means a basement, a rural road or a bad patch of town costs you nothing.

What keeps working

Just about everything you do at a door:

  • Starting and completing a visit
  • Recording an outcome
  • Writing notes, using the quick-note chips and tags
  • Taking photos of a property
  • Setting a follow-up or an appointment
  • Adding a new lead
  • Your route, your leads list, your pipeline and your lists
  • The map, if you downloaded the area first

Nothing spins, nothing fails and nothing asks you to try again. It behaves exactly as it does on full signal.

What waits

Three things genuinely need a connection, and all three are things you’d expect:

  • Signing in. If you’re signed out with no signal you can’t get back in. This is the one real reason to make sure you’re signed in before you leave.
  • Live map imagery. Unless you downloaded the area — see below — the map falls back to its own drawn version or to the list of stops.
  • Walking directions. The line along the roads is worked out by a server. You’ll still see the door on the map and the straight-line distance to it.

Knowing where you stand

The sync chip sits at the top of your Today screen and it is always telling you the truth:

What it says What it means
Synced Everything you’ve done is on the server.
Syncing It’s uploading right now.
Pending, with a number That many things are saved on your phone, waiting for signal.
Offline No connection. Everything is being saved locally.
Sync failed Something couldn’t upload. Worth a look.

Tap it for the detail. There’s also a full list under More → Upload queue, with an Upload now button — though you shouldn’t need it, because the app drains the queue by itself the moment signal returns.

Before you go somewhere bad

If you already know the area has no service, take the map with you.

  1. Do this on wi-fi, before you leave

It’s a real download — tens of megabytes — and doing it on cellular in the field is the slow, expensive way round.

  2. Open More, then Offline maps

It shows you how big the download is before it starts, so you’re choosing rather than finding out afterwards.

  3. Tap Download

It saves the streets for the whole area assigned to you. If your territory is very large it saves a slightly wider, less-detailed view and says so — zoomed right in, the map falls back to its own drawn version, which also works with no signal.

If something is stuck

Occasionally a number in the queue doesn’t move. Almost always it’s because there genuinely hasn’t been signal yet — but if you’re sure you have bars:

  1. Check you're not in simulate-offline mode

More → Field testing → Simulate no signal. It’s a testing switch, and it behaves exactly like real dead air, which makes it very convincing if it was left on.

  2. Tap Upload now

More → Upload queue → Upload now. If anything shows as failed, Retry failed is next to it.

  3. Still stuck? Tell your admin

Don’t re-enter the visits. They’re saved, and re-entering them puts double knocks into your numbers — which is worse than waiting.

What’s kept on your phone

More → Saved on this phone shows you exactly what the app is holding for you — properties, photos, how much space it is using, and when it last synced.

One line there is worth reading: Storage — Kept or May be cleared. If it says may be cleared, your phone is allowed to delete that saved copy when it runs low on space. Adding the app to your home screen is what stops that. Anything already uploaded is safe either way.
